Stick to a schedule

Back to back Zoom classes can get tedious and taxing for you child. You need to understand that it’s almost as tough for them to sustain their attention as it is for you while working remotely. Instead of cramming their school classes and extracurriculars together, space them out and stick to a schedule for both.
Be mindful of screentime

We understand that screentime is no longer a choice when going to school physically is out of question. However, it’s still important for your child to get that much needed break from their laptops in order to be able to stay productive and keep their mind open for learning. Encourage frequent short breaks in the middle, maybe having them overlap with your own. This is crucial as the brain is only able to maintain true focus for 45 minutes before it begins to disconnect.

Create a creative space

If you have sufficient space at home, it’s probably a good idea to have your kid take their extracurricular activities in an outdoor space such as a backyard, patio or front lawn. It’s not only a breath of fresh air for their overworked minds but also simulates an environment where they would otherwise be taking their extracurriculars.

Incentivize

A jam-packed school schedule followed by tons of homework can get too much for their young brains when there is no outlet and very limited options for socialising with peers. As we move into month 7 of the global lockdown, most families have formed some sort of isolation cells or close knit circles where they are at ease knowing everyone is following the standard safety protocols and chances are that some of your child’s friends are part of your close circle. In that case, you can possibly incentivise by offering to have them take their extracurricular classes together. This sense of companionship can dramatically aid in stimulating your kid’s interest in pursuing their hobbies and passion as we try to navigate this new reality.
